It all began with a, but why though?
Some of my earliest memories were of gathering and growing food with my dad. Watercress from this drain, puha from that field, pipi from this part of the beach.
We would watch my Papa check the stars to determine when it was time to gather tuna (eel) and at his nod, off we would go to harvest during the right time of year.
Over years the safety of gathering food from our traditional gathering grounds has been severely compromised.
It was one of my first interactions of experiencing the problem of failed infrastructure.
But why?
Early in my career, I had always been perpetually curious about the status quo, discovering inefficiencies and resolving with solutions was something that came very naturally to me.
While working in the construction sector specifically in drainage and waste water, experienced a number of inefficiencies that never seemed to sufficiently answered.
My but why questions, were always “that’s just the way it’s always been done”
